A pair of Northwest Division rivals continue their battle on the hardwood in the Western Conference playoffs as the series shifts to the Beehive State. The fourth-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder are on the road as they play Game 3 of their best of seven series against the fifth-seeded Utah Jazz Saturday night. Oklahoma City won the opening game of the series, 116-108, at home Sunday evening: Utah evened the series with a 102-95 road win in Game 2 Wednesday night. The Thunder leads the all-time regular season series 106-78 and took three of four meetings this season, including a 103-89 win on the road in the last matchup on December 23, 2017. The teams have split four previous playoff series with Utah holding a 13-11 edge in games won.
Oklahoma City Thunder Trying to Regain Home Court

Oklahoma City had their chances to put Utah away and take a 2-0 series lead but allowed the Jazz to rally. The Thunder now has the difficult task of going to Salt Lake City to try and earn a win to regain home court advantage. One thing is painfully clear: Oklahoma City is going to have to be much better shooting the ball than they were in Game 2 of the series. The Thunder rode a 19-0 run to take a 10 point lead with 1:02 to play in the third quarter but that was their high water mark. Oklahoma City saw that lead halved before the quarter was up and then was outscored 28-16 in the decisive fourth quarter to end up with the loss.

The Thunder shot just 40 percent from the floor in the contest, including an 11 of 35 showing from beyond the arc. Oklahoma City was 12 of 18 at the line, turned the ball over 13 times and committed 25 fouls, leading to 33 Utah free throw attempts. In addition, the Thunder was punished 56-46 on the glass. Russell Westbrook led Oklahoma City with 19 points, nine rebounds, 13 assists and four steals though he shot only seven of 19. Paul George, who was white hot in Game 1, had 18 points but shot six of 21 from three point land, including four of 12 from beyond the arc. Carmelo Anthony was six of 17, including two of nine from long range, en route to 17 points. Jerami Grant had 13 points off the bench and Corey Brewer added 11: Steven Adams had only nine points and seven rebounds before fouling out. Six of his points came in the fourth quarter while the rest of the team combined to go three for 24.

Utah Jazz Look to Build Momentum

Utah let a lead slip away with a horrible stretch midway through the third quarter but regrouped to earn the win and square the series. The Jazz now tries to do something that they struggled with in the Quin Snyder era: winning at home in the postseason. Utah is 4-4 on the road under Snyder in the postseason with two of those losses coming to Golden State, but just 1-4 at home. The Jazz led by nine midway through the third before giving up 19 straight points. Utah dug deep and outscored the Thunder 35-17 the rest of the way to earn the victory. The Jazz hope to carry that momentum back to Salt Lake City for this contest.

The Jazz had a rough night from the floor as they hit only 41.7 percent of their shots from the floor in the contest, including nine of 29 from three point range. Utah was physical and it paid dividends to the tune of 33 free throw attempts: the team will likely work on that as they sank only 23 of those chances. The Jazz owned the boards 56-46 and harassed Oklahoma City down the stretch when it came to shooting the ball. Donovan Mitchell led Utah with 28 points, 13 of which came in the critical fourth quarter. Ricky Rubio put up 22 points, seven rebounds and nine assists while Derrick Favors (20 points, 16 rebounds) and Rudy Gobert (13 points, 15 boards, two steals, three blocks) each posted double-doubles. Jonas Jerebko added 10 off the bench as he contributed on off nights for Joe Ingles and Jae Crowder.

Trends:

Oklahoma City

Thunder are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 vs. NBA Northwest

Utah

Jazz are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 when their opponent allows 100 points or more in their previous game.
Jazz are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game

The under is 5-0 in the Thunder’s last 5 road games, 5-0 in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and 4-0 in their last 4 Saturday games. The under is 4-1 in Utah’s last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record, 4-1 in their last 5 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days and 4-1 in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning straight up record. This one is going to be determined by the pace of the game. The Jazz were the league’s best defensive team by a mile since they started their second half surge, shutting down opposing offenses at a ridiculous rate. Utah showed the grit and determination that they have been known for under Snyder by rallying after falling behind by 10 with just over a minute to play in the third quarter. The Jazz stifled Westbrook, George and Anthony in the fourth quarter while Mitchell took control of the game. With his performance, Mitchell broke Michael Jordan’s record for most points in a guard’s first two playoff games with 55. Utah is at home and they have momentum: look for the crowd to spur a solid defensive effort and a victory.
