Aston Villa vs Derby County Live Stream Game

Aston Villa won for the first time in 2017 as they beat Derby in a hard-fought Championship game at Villa Park.

Centre-back James Chester scored the only goal when he nodded in Henri Lansbury’s corner from close range.

Derby had a big appeal for a penalty denied before the break when Darren Bent went down under a challenge.

Andre Green hit the post early in the second half for Villa, who held on to end a 10-match winless run despite Leandro Bacuna’s late sending-off.

Bacuna was dismissed for the first time in a Villa shirt in added time after an altercation with an assistant referee, but Derby were unable to create any further chances.

Bent had the Rams’ best opportunity of the second half, but the former Villa striker’s header was pushed over the bar by goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

That effort was Derby’s only attempt on target, as they saw their winless run extend to six games in all competitions, leaving them 10 points outside the play-off places.

Villa, meanwhile, remain 17th in the table, but they are now eight points clear of the relegation zone with 13 matches to play this season.

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce told BBC WM:

“It wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t going to be. It’s a relief for everyone concerned. It wasn’t great but at least the players showed that it meant something to them.

“We have got a lot of improving to do and we understand that. The supporters have gone home today having seen their team roll up their sleeves.

“The club has had a tough time for years and I am not going to change that in 16 weeks. But I will change it, I need time.”

Derby manager Steve McClaren told BBC Radio Derby:

“We deserved something and I can’t believe we’ve lost, but if you don’t score goals you don’t win games.

“I’m hugely disappointed and I can’t believe we didn’t get a penalty. I’ve seen it again and it was stonewall.

“The referee told me he wasn’t 100 per cent sure but it has cost us the game.”

Premier League Liverpool vs Stoke City on HDTV? Channel details, kick-off time, team news and match odds

After successive draws against West Ham and Burnley, Stoke’s Premier League existence is hanging by a thread, meaning a trip to Merseyside to play Liverpool is the last thing they need right now.

The Reds have scored 16 goals in their last four home games, conceding just the two scored by Roma in Tuesday’s 5-2 Champions League semi-final victory.

Stoke, by contrast, are on a run of one win in 12 games and have only scored nine goals in total since Paul Lambert took over as manager in mid January.

So have the Potters got a hope in hell of claiming the precious points they need to extend their Premier League status? Well there are pros and cons.

Andre Marriner (West Midlands): The Brummie official is rarely spotted at Stoke games these days, refereeing just two in the past couple of seasons – victory over Arsenal back in August and a draw at West Ham in November 2016. However, Marriner’s first Premier League game involving Stoke saw him disallow an early Steven Gerrard goal in a famous 0-0 draw at Liverpool during the club’s first campaign in the Premier League. We might need a few more than that ruled out this time, Andre.
Up to 50,000 Liverpool fans still can’t see why referee Andre Marriner disallowed Steven Gerrard’s free-kick ‘goal’ against Stoke City at Anfield in September 2008.

What the pundits say

Paul Merson (Sky Sports): This isn’t a great time for Stoke. They’ve been a bit unlucky of late if I’m being honest, they just haven’t been able to get over the line. And this is a hard one because Liverpool are usually a banker, but they are going to rest everybody ahead of their Champions League semi-final second leg with Roma. I’m going to go with 2-1 to Liverpool.

Mark Lawrenson (BBC): Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will need their fans to raise them against Stoke, but they are playing so well at the moment that even if they have an off-day I would still back them to win. Stoke badly need a win, but not only do they have an appalling record at Anfield, they are playing a team with such impressive firepower. What do the Potters do? They simply cannot compete if they try to fight fire with fire, and I do not see them holding out and nicking a goal either. I reckon 2-0 to the Reds.

David Goffin vs Karen Khachanov Live Stream Cd

Each weekday, we'll preview one must-see match that you'll find on Tennis Channel Plus, the digital network for the devoted tennis fan. To subscribe to Tennis Channel Plus, go to BuyTCPlus.com

On Thursday, world No. 10 David Goffin takes on 21-year-old Karen Khachanov in the Tennis Channel Plus Match of the Day.

Both players have one match under their belts in Barcelona, as Goffin defeated Marcel Granollers, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2, in the round of 32 on Tuesday; Khachanov beat Leonardo Mayer, 6-4, 6-3, on Wednesday.

Goffin is one of the more intriguing players in the tournament, as he was the world No. 7 as recently as the end of 2017. The Belgian is back from a freak eye injury he suffered in February at Rotterdam, in which the ball deflected off his racquet in a match with Grigor Dimitrov. Goffin missed the Marseille and Indian Wells tournaments, along with the Davis Cup quarterfinals, before returning to action in Miami.

On clay, and back in Europe, Goffin had a decent run in Monte Carlo last week, beating both Stefanos Tsitsipas and Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets before falling to Dimitrov in the quarterfinals. (No eye was harmed this time.)

Match point from David Goffin's win over Marcel Granollers in Barcelona:

Khachanov's opening-round match in this tournament was a bit more straightforward than Goffin's, and he should be feeling good about the way he is playing on clay so far. Khachanov won each of his first two matches in Monte Carlo in straight sets before running into Rafael Nadal in the tournament's round of 16. The eventual champion won that match 6-3, 6-2, but one would think that the 21-year-old Khachanov improved by simply getting the experience of playing against somebody like Rafa on clay.

For these two players, this will be the fourth ever meeting on the ATP tour. Goffin has gotten the best of this matchup, winning three of their four matches. One of those was wins came earlier this year in Montpellier, where Goffin won 6-4, 6-4.

On clay, the two have split two meetings, and Khachanov's win actually came in this very tournament one year ago. That was a 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-4 score, and the competitiveness of that match is a big reason why we're excited for the Barcelona rematch on Thursday.

World #1 and ten-time champion in Barcelona, Rafael Nadal, will look to keep his unbeaten run on the clay going against his compatriot Guillermo Garcia Lopez. Nadal, who has won his last 38 sets on a clay court in a row, a run that dates back to the start of last year’s French Open, has looked almost unbeatable so far this year on the red clay. Garcia Lopez, however, is a fine clay courter himself, and will surely be looking to give Nadal a real challenge. Who will come out on top?
History

Nadal and Garcia Lopez have met five times on Tour, and six times overall. Their first meeting came 16 years ago in 2002 in the final of a Futures event in Barcelona. Nadal won that match, contested on a hard court, in straight sets 6-3 7-6. He was similarly comfortable in their first Tour-level meetings. In 2005 Nadal won indoors in Valencia in the round of 16, 6-1 6-4, before defeating Garcia Lopez again in straight sets three years later in the Chennai Open quarterfinals.

Garcia Lopez got his revenge in 2010, picking up his first, and so far only, victory against Nadal in the semifinals in Thailand. The 34-year-old recovered from dropping the first set to win 2-6 7-6 6-3 and went on to defeat Jarkko Niemenen in the final. Nadal, however, got back to winning ways in the head-to-head a year later in Shanghai, winning 6-3 6-2. He was also victorious in straight sets in their only previous clay court meeting, which came in 2012 in Barcelona, with Nadal winning 6-1 6-2.
Path to the third round

Nadal, who is top seed in Barcelona, began his campaign in the second round after a bye in the first. That saw him take on fellow Spaniard, Roberto Carballes Baena, who won his first title earlier in the year in Quito. Despite a big difference in their comparative-level of experience, Carballes Baena played a very high quality match, and gave Nadal his biggest test on clay so far this year. Ultimately, however, Nadal had too much for the younger man, and won through 6-4 6-4.

Garcia Lopez, unseeded, began his tournament in the first round against Yuichi Sugita of Japan. Sugita, had a fine year in 2017, establishing himself as a consistent presence in the top 100 and winning a Tour-level title in Antalya on the grass. He gave a good account of himself against Garcia Lopez, pushing the Spaniard hard, but was ultimately left without reward as he fell 6-7 6-7. That set up a meeting with another Japanese player, Kei Nishikori. Nishikori, a two-time former champion in Barcelona, was unfortunately forced to retire after losing the first set.
How do they match up?

Garcia Lopez faces the same problem in approaching this match that Carballes Baena did. Both are fine clay court players, with the skillset to beat most on the red dirt. Indeed, Garcia Lopez has five-times been a titlist at Tour-level, with three of those crowns coming on clay courts. The basis of Garcia Lopez’s game is consistency from the baseline. The Spaniard is an excellent ball striker, both his forehand and backhand are exceedingly reliable shots.

He is also a fine mover, particularly on a clay court. However, he is not likely to hit an opponent off the court. Which is the root of the problem he has when facing Nadal. He is unlikely to outlast Nadal, who is one of the fittest players on Tour, and who can move at least as well on clay as his opponents. He can also hit through them. Nadal will likely look to target Garcia Lopez’s one handed backhand, which will have to withstand a most searching examination from the cross court forehand of Nadal.
Prediction

It would likely take the best performance of Garcia Lopez’s career, or something close to it, for him to win this match. It’s hard to see what he can bring to the court to unsettle Nadal. A bigger hitter would at least have a puncher’s chance, but for Garcia Lopez it’s a very unfavourable match up. Of course, it is possible that Nadal could have a bad day, but based on his form so far on the clay this year, that does not seem likely. Nadal in straight sets.

Xi Jinping to host PM Modi in Mao’s private villa, boat ride on the cards
Several layers of security have been put in place in and around the hotel where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will stay during his visit to Wuhan, China.

Security has been tightened in Wuhan city’s downtown area where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to stay during his two-day informal summit with President Xi Jinping that is expected to reboot bilateral ties.

Several layers of security had been put in place in and around the hotel where Modi will stay and a large number of police personnel were deployed in the area by late Thursday afternoon.

Chairman Mao Zedong’s private villa, where Xi is expected to host Modi on Friday for their first meeting, was made out of bounds for tourists on Thursday.

The villa, opened to the public in 1993, was where Mao would often come from Beijing to spend a few days or weeks. It is built on the banks of the East Lake, another Wuhan attraction and on which Modi and Xi are expected to take a boat ride during their meeting.

By Thursday afternoon, security personnel had also been deployed around the lake.

Many local residents passing by the hotel where the Indian leader will stay stopped by to take photos after noticing the buzz of activity around it. Some of them had heard about the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Wuhan.

Wuhan’s profile got an international boost in January when British Prime Minister Theresa May began her three-day China visit from the city, before flying to Beijing.

A recent survey by state broadcaster CCTV said the country’s happiest people live in Wuhan, the biggest city in central China and capital of landlocked Hubei province, a little more than 1,000 km south of Beijing.

It is rare, even unprecedented, for Xi to host a leadership summit outside Beijing but choosing Wuhan, a provincial capital and a second-tier city, reflects his vision to focus on emerging cities, which many outside China will never have heard of.

Vice-foreign minister Kong Xuanyou explained why Wuhan, which has the mighty Yangtze river flowing by, was chosen as the venue.

“We have taken multiple factors into account: Whether Prime Minister Modi has visited the city earlier, the bond of this place with India, as a representative city (of central China)... Wuhan is also an important hub for business, education, research and emerging industries. It is also a hub for inland waterway transport in China,” Kong told a news briefing.

Kong said in recent years, Hubei province and some states in India have intensified exchanges and expanded business cooperation.

“PM Modi has travelled to east, west, north and south of China but he is yet to visit central China. This will complete his tour of China,” he said.

And to top it all, Wuhan has emerged as China’s happiest city.

“CCTV’s ‘happiness index’took into accountfactors such as governance, economic strength, urban infrastructure, and recreational activities. This year's survey covered more than 100,000 households and 800 million internet users across China,” the Sixth Tone news website reported.

The city is an education hub, with some reports saying it has the world’s largest number of students for a single city.

“With more than 90 higher education institutions, including Huazhong University of Science and Technology, one of the country’smost prestigious schools, Wuhan is considered a hub for education and entrepreneurship, and has attracted considerable foreign investment,” the report said.

“In terms of investment in education and training, Wuhan outperformed all of its peers, including megacities Beijing and Shanghai — neither of which earned a spot in the top 10 for overall happiness.”

Happiness, a picturesque river bank and two leaders ready to shed and make history: The setting seems about right.

But whether Modi and Xi will emerge happier about the state of China-India ties from their summit in Wuhan, remains to be seen.

Nadal has not lost a clay-court match since Dominic Thiem beat him in Rome back in May 2017.

He has not even lost a set in that time or been taken as far as 5-5, such has been his dominance on the surface.

He opened his Barcelona Open campaign - where he is already a 10-time champion - yesterday with a routine 6-4, 6-4 win over Roberto Carballes Baena, although there was a brief scare when he trailed 2-0 in the first before winning four on the bounce and never really looking back.

Express Sport brings you all the latest from his third-round clash with Garcia-Lopez - the winner will face Martin Klizan, Novak Djokovic’s conqueror, in the quarter-finals.

Rafael Nadal vs Guillermo Garcia-Lopez LIVE

2.25pm: It's a real ding-dong battle this between Dimitrov and Jaziri. More than two hours gone and Jaziri serves for 5-2... only for Dimitrov to break back! The world No 88 was two games away from an upset (still is, technically) but it's all back on serve in the decider now.

Nadal still waiting nervously. Well, probably not nervous. Probably just waiting. Playing Candy Crush or something.

2pm: Well we're going to have to wait a little longer! Grigor Dimitrov has wobbled and Jaziri has pounced to take the second set 6-3. Upset brewing? Maybe.

More upset will be those hoping to watch Nadal BEFORE their siesta. Perhaps now is the perfect moment for a quick snooze.

1.30pm: Pista Rafael Nadal isn't quite ready for him yet.

The "King of Clay" is still in the dressing room waiting for Malek Jaziri and Grigor Dimitrov to finish.

Dimitrov has just come back from a break down to win the first set 7-5 so it might be another 40 minutes or so until Nadal gets on court.

The two leaders pledged during Macron's visit to seek stronger measures to contain Iran but Trump made no commitments to stay in the nuclear deal, negotiated by former President Barack Obama. Trump also threatened Tehran with retaliation if it restarted its nuclear program.

Macron has sought a new approach that would see the United States and Europe agree to address any Iranian nuclear activity after 2025, tackle Iran's ballistic missile program and seek a political solution to contain Iran in Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

"What I want to do and what we decided together with your president is that we can work on a more comprehensive deal addressing all these concerns," Macron said, adding that France remains committed to the bottom line goal of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

"Iran shall never possess any nuclear weapon. Not now not in five years, not in 10 years, never," he told clapping lawmakers.

"Whatever the decision of the United States will be, we will not leave the floor to the actions of rogues. We will not leave the floor to this conflict of powers in the Middle East," Macron told Congress.

"I think we can work together to build this comprehensive deal for the whole region, for our people, because I think it fairly addresses our concerns," he said.

The French president received several standing ovations during his speech.

In a broad speech, Macron also urged U.S. lawmakers to reject unilateralism and remain engaged with the world, saying modern economic and security challenges must be a shared responsibility.

"We can choose isolationism," said Macron, but closing the door to the world will not stop its evolution. He said that now is a critical moment and the global community must act with urgency to protect international institutions like the United Nations and NATO.

Macron denounced protectionism and nationalism and said the United States should step up its engagement with the world - a direct challenge to Trump's calls for withdrawal from the Paris climate pact and international trade agreements.

"The United States is the one who invented this multilateralism. You are the one now who has to help preserve and reinvent it," he said.

He said he was confident the United States would eventually come back into the Paris climate accord.

"Let us work together in order to make our planet great again," he said. "I believe in building a better future for our children, which requires offering them a planet that is still habitable in 25 years."

Macron is the eighth French president to address a joint meeting of Congress, and the first since Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007, House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan's office said. The last foreign leader to address a joint meeting was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.

Germany's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that his country's top priority regarding Iran is to preserve the nuclear deal. Responding to a question regarding Macron's proposal of a supplementary deal, a spokesman said, noting that Germany would look at his suggestion carefully.

"For us, the position stays clear – the highest priority is keeping the nuclear agreement and full implementation on all sides," he said. "The nuclear agreement was negotiated with seven countries and the EU and can't be renegotiated or replaced on a whim, but it is also clear that beyond the nuclear agreement we want to make sure that Iran's nuclear program serves exclusively peaceful purposes," he said.

U.S. non-proliferation envoy Christopher Ford said on Wednesday that the United States is not seeking to reopen or renegotiate the Iran nuclear deal, but hopes to stay in it to fix its flaws with a supplementary agreement.

"We are not aiming to renegotiate the JCPOA or reopen it or change its terms," Ford told reporters on the sidelines of a nuclear non-proliferation conference in Geneva.

"We are seeking a supplemental agreement that would in some fashion layer upon it a series of additional rules – restrictions, terms, parameters, whatever you want to call it – that help answer these challenges more effectively," he said.

Kyle Edmund goes in search of a first ATP World Tour title on Sunday when he takes on two-time former champion Pablo Andujar in the Grand Prix Hassan II final in Marrakech.

Watch and bet on Edmund vs Andujar live from Marrakech online at Unibet > live streaming > tennis. The final begins at 2.00pm local time/BST on Sunday.

Second seed Kyle Edmund and the resurgent two-time former champion Pablo Andujar square off for the ATP 250 Grand Prix Hassan II title in Marrakech on Sunday. Edmund arrived in Marrakech on a three-match losing streak and without a win since the Australian Open, but the British No. 1 has returned to some of his best form over the last week in the Moroccan city, while Andujar - who is making his way back up the rankings after undergoing three elbow surgeries in the last three years - is currently riding a nine-match winning streak after winning the Alicante Challenger last week. Edmund and Andujar take to court at 2.00pm local time/BST on Sunday.

It’s been a tough last couple of months for Edmund, but the 23-year-old continues to check things off his tennis bucket list over the first quarter of the season, backing up reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final at the Australian Open in January by advancing into his maiden ATP World Tour final in Marrakech this week - can the South African-born Brit now capture his first title?

Despite being forced to play two matches on Saturday due to persistent rain earlier in the tournament, Edmund has largely cruised into the final without too much hassle, benefitting from a first round retirement against Jiri Vesely while leading 5-0 before easing past Radu Albot 6-2 6-4 in the second round. Edmund went to another level in taking out the confident Malek Jaziri in his first match on Saturday before registering an excellent 6-3 6-4 victory over experienced former top 10 player Richard Gasquet to secure his spot in the Grand Prix Hassan II final.

Unlike many British men over the years, Edmund actually thrives on clay, with his heavy groundstrokes - especially off the forehand wing - complimenting the surface nicely, while the slow bounce gives him more time to set up his booming groundstrokes. Edmund’s first six titles on the Futures circuit all came on clay between 2012 and 2014, while he also picked up two Challenger titles on the surface before transitioning to a full-time ATP player, including his last Challenger triumph in Rome in 2016 when he beat Filip Krajinovic in the final.

After rising as high as No. 42 in the world in 2017 following semi-finals in Atlanta, Winston-Salem and Vienna, along with reaching the third rounds of Roland Garros and the U.S. Open, Edmund climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 24 earlier this year after becoming just the sixth British man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final in the Open Era when he beat Grigor Dimitrov and Kevin Anderson on his way to the final four of the Australian Open, where his brilliant run was ended by Marin Cilic. Having recaptured some of that form in Marrakech, is Edmund ready to win a first ATP World Tour title?

2
Pablo Andujar (Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty Images)
He’ll have his work cut out for him against a man who is looking to make tournament history in Marrakech. After winning back-to-back ATP titles at the Grand Prix Hassan II when the tournament was held in Casablanca in 2011-12, Pablo Andujar is looking to become the first man to win the ATP 250 event three times on Sunday. Andujar, who also won the clay court title in Gstaad in 2014, has continued his fine form into Marrakech this week, beginning his campaign with straight sets victory over Ilya Ivashka and Andrea Arnaboldi before surviving a tight three-set battle with qualifier Alexey Vatutin in the quarter-finals in his first match on Saturday. Andujar then returned to court soon after and claimed a much-needed straight sets win over Joao Sousa to book his spot in the final.

"I’m extremely happy today," Andujar said. "I didn’t expect to be in the final at as I’m just coming back from injury. Playing in Morocco is always very special for me as I’ve won here in the past.

Tomorrow will be a tough final against Kyle (Edmund), he’s an excellent player. I’m a bit tired right now, but very much looking forward to the final and very happy with my two wins today."

The injury Andujar mentioned was very serious and could have ended his career. The Spaniard was forced to undergo three surgeries on his elbow over the last year or so, with Andujar a combined 2-12 at all levels since September 2016 before he surged back into form by winning the Alicante Challenger last week. Starting the season outside the world’s top 1,800, Andujar - who was a Madrid Masters semi-finalist in 2013 before hitting a career-high ranking of No. 32 in 2015 - is now back up to a projected mark of No. 205 by extending his winning streak to nine matches in making the Marrakech final. If he wins the title on Sunday, Andujar will climb even higher to around No. 155.

The pair have only played once on tour before, with Edmund winning a qualifying match in Beijing in straight sets in 2016. Both players are in a completely different spot in their careers now, so we can pretty much disregard that result when analysing this final. Andujar hasn’t played much tennis over the last two years and now he’s set to play his 10th match in the last two weeks after playing two matches on Saturday, one a taxing three-setter. Edmund meanwhile has only played six matches since the Australian Open and hasn’t lost more than four games in a set this week. The British player has the weaponry to excel on clay and has more firepower behind his groundstrokes, allowing him to finish points quicker. If Edmund plays like he has all week, he should be collecting his first ATP title on Sunday.

By KELVIN CHAN, AP Business Writer

HONG KONG (AP) — World share benchmarks were mixed on Thursday as investors digested the latest quarterly corporate earnings and awaited the outcome of a European Central Bank meeting.

KEEPING SCORE: European shares were uneven in early trading. France's CAC 40 rose 0.4 percent to 5,433.59 but Germany's DAX was flat at 12,422.73. Britain's FTSE 100 edged less than 0.1 percent lower to 7,376.87. Wall Street was poised to open lower. Dow futures dipped 0.1 percent to 24,052.00 and broader S&P 500 futures crept less than 0.1 percent lower to 2,643.60.

EARNINGS: South Korea's Samsung Electronics reported its net income grew 52 percent in the first quarter on robust demand for its memory chips. Automaker Hyundai's quarterly profit fell to an eight-year low on slowing sales while German's Volkswagen said profit slipped because of accounting changes. Energy company Royal Dutch Shell's profits rose by two-thirds on higher crude prices. Deutsche Bank eked out a profit after a big loss in the previous period. Earlier, U.S. companies reported strong numbers, with aerospace company Boeing and railroad operator Norfolk Southern both topping Wall Street's estimates.

UPCOMING: Investors are hunkering down ahead of a few other events with market-moving potential, starting with a European Central Bank policy decision later Thursday. No changes to interest rates are expected but markets will be watching for any hints from ECB Chief Mario Draghi on the outlook for the eurozone economy and future rate policy. On Friday there's a historic meeting between the leaders of North and South Korea as well as U.S. quarterly GDP data.

YIELDS: Rising interest rates for U.S. Treasurys remained on investors' minds, with the yield on the 10-year note hovering at a four-year high as it climbed to 3.03 percent from 3 percent. There were worries that markets would be rattled when the yield crossed the 3 percent threshold because it might cause the Federal Reserve to alter its outlook for interest rates but they now appear to be unfounded. Higher rates, which are rising on expectations of stronger U.S. economic growth and inflation, are also helping shore up the dollar.

ASIAN SCORECARD: Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index climbed 0.5 percent to 22,319.61 and South Korea's Kospi jumped 1.1 percent to 2,475.64 after Samsung reported better than expected earnings. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 1.1 percent to 30,007.68 and the Shanghai Composite in mainland China lost 1.4 percent to 3,075.03. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dipped 0.2 percent to 5,910.80. Markets in Southeast Asia were lower.

CHINA TENSIONS: A report that U.S. authorities are investigating whether Chinese tech giant Huawei violated sanctions on Iran weighed on Chinese markets and tech shares. It also threatens to rekindle trade tensions between the two countries ahead of a visit to Beijing by U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to discuss trade and economic issues. Asked about the report by the Wall Street Journal, Foreign Ministry spokewoman Hua Chuying said China opposes countries imposing unilateral sanctions and urged the U.S. to avoid taking actions that could harm "normal, open, transparent and win-win international trade."

QUOTEWORTHY: "The market has sort of oversold their equity hand, I think the 3 percent got overplayed," said Stephen Innes, head of Asian trading at OANDA. On the U.S.-China trade meeting, he added, "With the U.S. making that olive branch offering and making the step to go over there, I think it would be highly unlikely if they didn't come back with some sort of outcome."

ENERGY: Oil futures extended gains. Benchmark U.S. crude oil rose 15 cents to $68.20 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 35 cents to settle at $68.05 a barrel on Wednesday. Brent crude, used to price international oils, rose 34 cents to $74.34 a barrel in London.

CURRENCIES: The dollar slipped to 109.36 yen from 109.43 yen. The euro rose to $1.2176 from $1.2162.

North and South Korea summit: The people Kim trusts the most

North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un will be bringing an elite group of confidantes and advisers along with him when he crosses into South Korea.

The South say it has never hosted such a senior delegation from Pyongyang. This is the third inter-Korean summit, but this time it is also a prelude to a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un. No sitting US president has ever met a North Korean leader.

So who does Kim trust the most as he heads into uncharted diplomatic waters?
Kim Yo-jong - increasingly powerful sister

The importance of Kim Yo-jong to her brother's master plan was made clear when she was made the ambassador for the recent Winter Olympics in the South, which is arguably where this all started.
Media captionWhat we've seen of Kim Yo-jong from North Korean media

At that point, she was thought to be the first immediate member of the Kim dynasty to visit the South since the Korean war ended in 1953.

She remains on a US sanctions list over alleged links to human rights abuses in North Korea, but was still wined and dined by South Korea's president and top officials.

She was the smiling face of the North Korean leadership at the Olympics, as South Korean media analysed her freckles and clothing - and speculated on whether she was pregnant.

But her power within the state is not to be underestimated, and analysts say that many of the ruthless decisions Mr Kim took were probably made with his sister by his side.

Kim Yong-nam - survivor of purges

The 90-year-old Kim Yong-nam has seen the rule of all three North Korean leaders in his career.

Unlike Kim Jong-un, he has travelled abroad on official visits. He went to Iran last summer to attend President Hassan Rouhani's inauguration ceremony for his second term.

His loyalty to the leadership has never been questioned and some have pointed out that his ability to survive purges is impressive.

"He makes no mistakes. That's why he could keep his high-level post in a country where political purges are common," South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted one North Korean defector as saying.

Choe Hwi - North Korean cultural don

North Korea's sports minister is known for his relatively relaxed demeanour in his state media appearances and photo opportunities.

His first post of any significance was as a manager of the Sea of Blood opera troupe in the mid-1980s, according to the North Korea Leadership Watch blog.

He has spent most of his career in North Korea's arts sector and is even thought to have been involved in the establishment of Moranbong Band, a North Korean all-female pop group.

The breakthrough role of the Winter Olympics in North-South relations as well as recent cultural exchanges may account for his importance.

The Slovakian qualifier reeled off eight of the last 10 points sending Djokovic packing from his Barcelona opener, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

The 140th-ranked Klizan, who had dropped eight of nine prior sets vs. Djokovic, toppled the former No. 1 for the first time in five meetings.

"I feel I haven’t lived up to your expectations, not even my own," Djokovic said afterward. "It’s hard to deal with these types of games and defeats, I wasn’t playing at my best, only during the second set. I will try to continue and see where it takes me."

Djokovic, who reached the Monte-Carlo third round in his clay-court debut last week, played periods of erratic points in the opening set, dominated the second set then lost the plot with some surprising routine misses at crunch time.

A 2015 Barcelona semifinalist, Klizan will play 12th-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez for a place in the quarterfinals.

The 12th-ranked Serbian's first Barcelona appearance in 12 years was cut short by some sloppy stretches and Klizan's sharp shot-making down the stretch.

Djokovic's departure opens up the top quarter of the draw even more for world No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who was on course for a potential quarterfinal showdown with the 12-time Grand Slam champion.

Fresh off his run to an 11th Monte-Carlo championship on Sunday, Nadal launches his bid for an 11th Barcelona crown on the court bearing his name today when he faces compatriot Roberto Carballes Baena.

Monte-Carlo finalist Kei Nishikori, who could have faced Nadal in the third round, retired from the tournament due to an apparent leg injury while facing a 3-6 deficit against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Match play has resembled a trip to the lost and found for Djokovic, once one of the stingiest players in the sport now prone to some head-scratching errors on rally balls.

Surprisingly, Djokovic's trademark two-handed backhand failed him on occasion in the opening set.

Squandering a 40-15 lead, Djokovic pushed two-hander wide gifting the second break and a 4-1 lead to the lefthander.

Djokovic held for 2-5 then slammed down a ball in frustration over a sloppy start.

The 28-year-old Klizan cracked an ace out wide snatching the opening set in 32 minutes.

The former world No. 1 regrouped ripping a pair of aces to hold in the first game of the second set.

Playing with more energy and urgency, Djokovic earned his first break in the fourth game then rocketed another ace out wide holding at 15 for 4-1.

Producing more precise combinations and playing points with greater care, Djokovic drilled a return to break in the sixth game and reeled off nine straight points to snatch the set and level the match.

The 30-year-old Serbian served 94 percent and won 26 of 33 points played in an overwhelming second set.

Each man took turns dominating for a set before dueling for much of the third.

Klizan clubbed his fourth ace holding at 15 for 2-1. Djokovic drove a forehand down the line setting up a drive forehand volley to answer.

At his best, Djokovic terrorizes second serve with his return game. Today, he missed several second-serve returns as Klizan sustained his edge.

A woman believed to be in her 90s and who lived at a community housing complex is the latest victim to be identified in Monday's van attack in Toronto that killed 10 people.

Betty Forsyth was described by her longtime neighbour Mary Hunt, 84, as a lively person who loved to feed the birds and squirrels on her regular walks through the neighbourhood.
Hunt said a relative of Forsyth called to break the news that her neighbour was among those killed when a white rental van mounted the sidewalk of busy Yonge Street and drove into pedestrians.

The accused driver, 25-year-old Alek Minassian, faces 10 counts of first-degree murder and 13 counts of attempted murder.

Due to the complexity of the investigation, Ontario's chief coroner, Dr. Dirk Huyer, said Tuesday it will be several days before his team officially confirms victims' identities and that "to be fair to families," the names of all 10 victims will be made public at the same time.

But family, friends and employers have begun reaching out to news outlets and posting online about the people who have died.
Renuka Amarasingha

On Wednesday morning, the Toronto District School Board identified Amarasingha as having died in the attack.

John Molloy, director of education, said Amarasingha was a former TDSB adult student who had worked as a nutrition services staff member at a number of schools since 2015. She was also a single mother to a young son.
"It is with heavy hearts that we are learning of the death of a TDSB staff member whose life was tragically cut short," wrote John Molloy, director of education, in a statement.

Rangika Karunathilake, a friend of Amarasingha, said Wednesday that she is trying to come to terms with her death.

"She is like a sister to me. I have known her almost 13 years. The last two years she was very close to me," Karunathilake told CBC Toronto.

"This is an unthinkable tragedy. She didn't deserve to die. She didn't deserve to die. How come these things can happen? They shouldn't die on the street. Like animals. I don't even know if animals are dying like this."

The "Golden State Killer" is believed to have killed at least 12 people, raped at least 45 people and committed multiple home burglaries in the 1970s and 1980s in crime sprees throughout California.

His "reign of terror," Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said Wednesday, spanned from the Sacramento area in Northern California down to Orange County in Southern California.

The suspected serial killer, Joseph James DeAngelo, was surprised when he was confronted by officers and arrested on Tuesday afternoon in Citrus Heights in Sacramento County, said Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones. DeAngelo was taken into custody without incident.

DeAngelo's name never came up in the investigation until last week, Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said.

It was discarded DNA that confirmed, "We had our man," Jones said at a news conference Wednesday.

"We found the needle in the haystack," Schubert said.

DeAngelo, who has adult children, was a police officer in Exeter in central California from 1973 to 1976, officials said. He was then a police officer in Auburn in Northern California from 1976 to 1979 until he was fired, officials said.

DeAngelo was fired in 1979 after he allegedly stole a hammer and a can of dog repellent, The Associated Press reported, citing Auburn Journal articles from the time.

"For over 40 years, countless victims have waited for justice," Schubert said. "Over these years, hundreds of individuals have sought justice for these victims and their families."

An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday and a complaint was filed charging DeAngelo with two counts of murder with special circumstances for the murder of a Sacramento couple in 1978, said Schubert. He was also charged with the capital murders of a couple killed in March 1980 in Ventura County, California. The crimes span 10 counties; charges are expected in more counties soon.

Bruce Harrington, whose brother and sister-in-law were killed in 1980 allegedly by the "Golden State Killer," said at the news conference, to the "ladies who were brutally raped in these crime scenes, sleep better tonight. He isn’t coming through the window. He’s now in jail and he’s history."

The terror started with burglaries and rapes in the Sacramento suburbs in summer 1976.

The "Golden State Killer" would break into his victims' homes by prying open a window or door while they slept, the FBI said.

He would then shine a flashlight into their faces, tie them up, ransack the house, and rape female victims, the FBI said.

Sometimes he would take jewelry, identification, cash, and coins from the victims' homes.

Some victims said the suspect called them after the crimes, the FBI said.

In 1978, the "Golden State Killer" was believed to have shot and killed a couple walking their dog in the Sacramento area.

That crime was followed by rapes in the Northern California area, including Stockton, Modesto, Davis, and the East Bay.

Between 1979 and 1981, the "Golden State Killer" was suspected of rapes and murders in Southern California. The FBI said the victims were tied up in the same way and had their homes ransacked in the same way as the Sacramento area victims.

The final crime tied to the "Golden State Killer" was the May 1986 rape and murder of an 18-year-old woman in the Southern California city of Irvine, the FBI said.

Another friend, John Nagl, told Keefe: “On H.R.’s shoulders may be decisions that preserve the world from the threat of thermonuclear war, and there’s literally nobody else who I would rather have in that position. If that means he has to say some things that are not completely true, I’m OK with that.”

Keefe observes, "In this telling, McMaster was a martyr – a man who loved America so much that he was prepared to sacrifice his own reputation in order to save it."

The article also reveals McMaster's frustrations with Jared Kushner's leading role in the Trump administration. Keefe quotes McMaster as saying, "You mean I’ve got somebody running a significant part of foreign policy who doesn’t report into my structure?”

Keefe adds that McMaster’s colleagues told him, “This is the way the president wants it, and it’s just going to happen” – so "McMaster let the matter go," writes Keefe.

Keefe also details McMaster's battles with Trump's former strategist, Steve Bannon. "Bannon and McMaster openly clashed over Afghanistan, and in at least one instance McMaster lost his temper, reportedly shouting, 'You’re a liar!'" Keefe writes.

"Bannon loathed McMaster, deriding him as a 'globalist' who was all too eager to commit troops to foreign conflicts in which America had little strategic interest," Keefe continues. "He pushed for a withdrawal of troops. McMaster told his staff that anyone who briefed Trump about Afghanistan should be prepared for his first question: 'What are we still doing there?' He presented Trump with photographs of Kabul from the 1970s, when it was a more peaceful, stable city. The message, tailored to Trump’s preference for images, was implicit: Afghanistan is not hopeless. Things can change. Trump ultimately sided with McMaster."

Thursday's game represents manager Arsene Wenger's final European home game in charge of Arsenal after he announced on Friday he would step down at the end of the season.

The Frenchman can still sign off in style by winning the Europa League and with it UEFA Champions League football for next season, but the team face their toughest test yet on Thursday.

The Gunners are the competition's top scorers but are also still to keep a clean sheet in the knockout stages. Given Atletico's formidable home record, denying the visitors an away goal could prove crucial.

Wenger's impending departure after 22 years may serve as extra motivation for the Arsenal players.

Midfielder Granit Xhaka has urged his team-mates to win it for the manager, per journalist Pete O'Rourke:

    Pete O'Rourke @SportsPeteO

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has challenged his team-mates to win the Europa League as a "special" gift for departing boss Arsene Wenger. #AFC

The Gunners will need to be at their best if they are to deny Atletico. Simeone's side are second in La Liga and have the best defence in the Spanish top flight.

The form of Alexandre Lacazette will give Arsenal hope, as the Frenchman has rediscovered his goalscoring touch since returning from knee surgery. He also seems to prefer playing at home, as shown by Match of the Day:

Alexandre Lacazette loves the Emirates Stadium! 80% of all his Arsenal goals have come there. 12 out of 15 ⚽ #MOTD2 https://t.co/MTYvwyYYYi

Defensively, there will also need to be improvements as Arsenal have leaked goals in Europe. Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi have looked shaky, and even if Costa does not play for Atleti, they still have plenty of firepower in Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa and Vitolo.

Simeone Hints at Tactical Switch

Atletico head to London on a run of just one win in their last five games, and Simeone has said he could change from his usual 4-4-2 formation for the game.

"I may use three central defenders in London, why not?" he said, per James Benge at the Evening Standard.

The Atleti boss has a small squad, and injury problems may mean he has few options, as noted by Dermot Corrigan at ESPN FC:
